mixed feelings about the weather

Spring is not as early as I think.  And there's still plenty of time for a cold snap - forecast implies more reasonable temperatures by Thursday or so.  Bit dry so far.

The smaller crocus that are my early warning for spring are done blooming already, but the big stripey crocus were hot on their heels and have been blooming all week.  Daffodils opened yesterday.  Last year, it was roughly April 8.  In 2010, they bloomed at the end of March.  Everything else, spring bulb-wise, is well leafed-out.  Oh, looks like the chinodoxia and some early grape hyacinth just opened this morning.

And the chorus frogs in the local wetland have started singing for dates.  Last year, I first noted them April 11, but suspected they'd been going for a couple of weeks already.

Regardless of the weather, I think it takes a certain period of time for plants to break dormancy - trees are still just barely leafing out.  Bulbs seem a bit more opportunistic.  Plants need more than just a certain temperature in order to thrive:  they need certain amounts of warmth and moisture, for certain periods of time.  They can withstand variations - some more than others - but the more sudden and extreme the shift, the harder it is to adapt.

One year does not make a trend.  Neither does three.  There have been springs this warm in the past; it's unusual, but not unheard of.  But some year, there will be a spring that is the beginning of an irretrievable shift.  Humans generally suck at avoiding things before it's too late; if we're lucky, we act in the nick of time, but usually we're at least sideswiped by the consequences.

On the long trend, the climate is changing, faster than many species can easily adapt.  The world will change.  It would do that regardless, but this time it's going to change fast enough for us to notice what's missing, and to regret it.

I think I'll go cheer myself up by looking at the flowers.

I feel this way as well.

Our lack of a proper winter adds to the feeling. Not that I'm complaining about the low heating bill.

Friending welcome, but lurking is fine too.

Constructive criticism is also welcome - whatever it is, trust me, I've heard worse.
