writing mixtape

Something that came up in the writing group was the idea of compiling a "soundtrack" for a story.

I'm not good at writing with music on; I find it too distracting.  But it can help me get in the right mood for thinking about a particular story.  I have a moderate commute, and I often use that time to think about the current writing-related puzzle, or to let my characters wander about and do things.  (It's a mixed blessing if I come up with something useful on the way to work....)

For me, the tone of the whole song - lyrics included - is important for setting mood.

Here's the current mix for the main project:

-- "Tone Poem" by Midnight Oil
-- "Catch the Light" by Sin Fang Bous
-- "Five in the Morning" by Lucy Kaplansky
-- "Polaris" by Jimmy Eat World
-- "Shut Your Eyes" by Snow Patrol
-- "God Says Nothing Back" by The Wallflowers
-- "Blue Caravan" by Vienna Teng
-- "Dream About Flying" by Alexi Murdoch
 -- "Human" by Civil Twilight
-- "Don't Panic" by Coldplay
-- "What's an Ocean For" by White Whale
-- "Fall on Me" by R.E.M.
-- "We Will Become Silhouettes" by The Postal Service
-- "This is Him (Hurricane Song)" by Virginia Coalition
-- "Send Me on My Way" by Rusted Root
-- "Upward Over the Mountain" by Iron & Wine

Many of those songs came my way from Pandora:  I seeded a station with a handful of soundtrack-likely songs, and was pleasantly surprised by the result.  The station can't quite stand on its own as a soundtrack - too many jarring segues - but for expanding the story-compatible song list (and my musical options in general), it's been wonderful.

Just reading DeLint's "Onion Girl"
...and he is fairly upfront about his soundtrack in the Forward. (Not music I'm familiar with mostly, but I appreciate that he went thru the exercise.)

Right now reading "Mind Chi" with Doug Wagner; we're fairly convinced that Holst's "The Planets" is THAT soundtrack. -Steve K'ski

Friending welcome, but lurking is fine too.

Constructive criticism is also welcome - whatever it is, trust me, I've heard worse.
