potato

(Also my favorite Blackadder sketch.)

I dug up ~150 potatoes today; I think that's the last of them.  Mostly not large, about the size of a golf ball.  But that's a useful size for everything except baking.

They're in the basement now, laid out on the cardboard trays the canned cat food comes in.  These were mostly the red golds and the...Adirondack reds I think.  Most of the purple vikings and the banana fingerlings had already been harvested.  They stayed in the ground a bit too long, I always lose a few to critters that way, and this funky warm weather is making things start to sprout.

The funky warm weather (mid 80s today I think) also made it kind of annoying to do yardwork.  What are mosquitoes still doing alive?

A surprise, though:  there has been no frost in my garden.  I'm pretty sure it was in the low 30s at the beginning of the month; I harvested all the basil just before (then did not get around to processing it...so it goes).  But the basil's still alive (so I might get another chance), and I harvested 3 tomatoes today.

I blame it on the insulating overhang of trees:  holds off the frost, but also cuts down on the light so it's a mixed blessing.  The part of the garden that isn't under trees is angled to the morning sun, which helps too.

Friending welcome, but lurking is fine too.

Constructive criticism is also welcome - whatever it is, trust me, I've heard worse.
