cowbstacle? cowgility?

Weekend before last, and I made a quick trip to Iowa and back.  In McGregor we stopped at a very fine bookstore - more about that in its own post.  The main purpose of the trip was to see Mom; she had entered her quilts in the county fair...their quality exceeds county level, but it pleased Mom to get ribbons - first time she's entered any quilts.

We perused the other arts&crafts displays, then settled in to the bleachers to watch the bovine obstacle course:  kids trying to get much larger animals to perform a series of maneuvers and then get into a truck.  I waffled between being somewhat impressed by the perseverance of both child and cow and being concerned about child or cow getting hurt.  Anyway, it was interesting.

It was a pleasant-but-brief visit.  The drive home was long and winding; we used Prairie du Chien's "Country on the River" festival as an excuse to detour all the way up to Wabasha before crossing the Mississippi.  Pretty country, and we got to stop at our favorite swingset, Lark Toys, and the National Eagle Center.  We stopped for lunch at Los Gables.  Not bad; I'd happily eat there again. Another bookstore in Wabasha, then a winding drive thorugh the folded hilly bit of WI, toward barado6.

Got home late, baked a quick birthday cake (fudge bundt cake with M&Ms), and got a little sleep before heading Chicago-wards for gaming and a friend's 50th birthday party.  We played Kingdom Builder and Power Grid (Quebec board).

Then home - again late - and back to work the next day, where the game of managerial chicken continues:  no one's admitting that we can't meet the deadline with any sort of viable system...well no one at a certain level; those of us in the trenches have been saying it to the higher-ups for some time now.  If we do hit that deadline for go-live, we are going to be in a world of hurt.

Friending welcome, but lurking is fine too.

Constructive criticism is also welcome - whatever it is, trust me, I've heard worse.
